How are solid opals different from doublets and triplets?
Solid opals are a single piece of natural opal, while doublets and triplets are layered opals, with additional backing or capping to enhance their appearance. Solid opals are considered more valuable and durable.
Do you sell natural or treated opals?
We only sell high-quality, natural solid opals. We do not offer synthetic or artificially treated opals.

Care & Maintenance FAQs
How should I store my opal jewellery?
To keep your opals in great condition, store them in a soft pouch or a lined jewellery box to protect them from scratches. If you need to store them for an extended period, wrap them in cotton wool with a few drops of water, place them in a sealed plastic bag, and then store them in their box. This helps maintain moisture levels, preventing the stone from drying out in low-humidity environments.
Is it safe for opals to get wet?
- Solid opals: Yes, they can be exposed to water without damage. However, opals contain a small percentage of water naturally, so prolonged exposure to extremely dry conditions or sudden temperature shifts (such as boiling water or zero humidity storage) could lead to cracking.
- Doublets & triplets: These opals have multiple layers bonded together, and while occasional contact with water (like rain or a quick shower) won’t harm them, prolonged soaking can cause separation between the layers, leading to a cloudy or hazy appearance. It’s best to keep them dry.
What is the best way to clean opal jewellery?
- Solid opals: Gently clean with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth or brush. Avoid using harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or ultrasonic cleaning machines, as these can weaken the stone or cause damage.
- Doublets & triplets: Instead of soaking, lightly wipe the surface with a damp cloth and mild detergent to remove dirt or residue. Never submerge them in water, as this may weaken the adhesive holding the layers together.
Are opals prone to scratching?
Opals have a Mohs hardness of 5.5–6.5, meaning they are softer than many other gemstones. To prevent scratches or accidental damage, remove opal jewellery before doing household chores, working with tools, playing sports, or any activity where they might be knocked or rubbed against hard surfaces. If wearing a pendant on a long chain, be mindful that it doesn’t swing forward and hit solid objects.
Can an opal be polished again if it looks dull?
Yes, over time, opals may lose some of their shine due to wear. A professional jeweller or opal specialist can buff out minor scratches and restore the stone’s original polish. During this process, they can also check the jewellery setting to ensure the stone remains secure.

Our warranty covers manufacturing defects for 12 months. It does not cover accidental damage, wear and tear, or third-party alterations.
How do I make a warranty claim?
Contact us with proof of purchase and clear images of the defect. If approved, we will arrange a repair or replacement.
